Naturalization

What is Naturalization and Who is Eligible for it in Rhode Island?

To become a U.S. citizen, you must go through a process called naturalization. The first step in this process is to determine if you are eligible for citizenship. To be eligible, you must meet the following requirements:

– You must be 18 years of age or older

– You must be a legal permanent resident of the United States

– You must have been a legal permanent resident for at least 5 years (in some cases 3 years)

– You must be able to read, write, and speak English

-You must have a basic understanding of U.S. history and government

– You must be a person of good moral character

If you meet all of the eligibility requirements, you can begin the naturalization process by applying to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). The USCIS will review your application and, if everything is in order, they will schedule an interview with you

The process of becoming a U.S. citizen through naturalization

Can be long and complicated, but it is a rewarding experience. Once you become a U.S. citizen, you will enjoy all the rights and privileges that come with citizenship, including the right to vote, the right to travel freely in and out of the United States, and the ability to sponsor family members for green cards.

What to expect during your naturalization interview

After you have applied for naturalization and your application has been reviewed by USCIS, you will be scheduled for an interview. The interview is a chance for USCIS to ask you questions about your application and to verify that you are eligible for citizenship.

You can expect to be asked about your:

– Background

– Reason for wanting to become a U.S. citizen

– Economic situation

– Family members

– Travel history

– Criminal history

You will also be asked to take a civics test, which is a test on your knowledge of U.S. history and government. The test consists of 10 questions, and you must answer 6 of them correctly to pass. After passing the civics test, you will be scheduled for a swearing-in ceremony, at which point you will officially become a U.S. citizen.
